Whey protein: It is derived from liquid material left over after cheese production. Whey protein is a mixture of globular protein (this proteins form colloidal solution and soluble in water).
Whey protein is commercially available as a protein supplement in majorly three forms:-
- Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) is the most commonly available protein supplement nowadays. It is processed from whey and contains a small number of fats but a high quantity of carbohydrates whereas protein content varies from 29%-89% of the weight of supplement. It is relatively less costly as compared to other protein supplements. Because of the high quantity of carbs available in WPC is ideal for those people who are on gaining cycle.
Since whey protein is absorbed quickly into the body, thus ideally suitable for muscle repair and recovery after an intense workout. That is why it is very popular among bodybuilders. It is advisable that beginners/obese people must not use this product because of the high content of carbohydrates. It is taken pre and post-workout followed by consumption of the optimum amount of water.
- Whey Protein Isolate(WPI): It contains little amount of carbohydrates(carbs) and almost no fat and cholesterol with very high protein content greater than 90%+ of the weight of the supplements. It is expensive as compared to WPC. Since whey protein is absorbed quickly into the body, thus ideally suitable for muscle repair and recovery after an intense workout. That is why it is very popular among bodybuilders. It is more suitable for a person who wants to lose weight, bodybuilders on cutting cycle and athletes. It is taken pre and post-workout followed by consumption of the optimum amount of water.
- Hydrolyzed Whey Protein (WPH): It is very similar to whey protein isolate, but WPH is partially digests and very easy on stomach. It contains no fat and cholesterol and a very little amount of carbohydrate. Since they are partially digested get quickly absorbed by body and WPH is suitable for majority of the population. These are most expensive protein supplements. It is taken pre and post workout followed by consumption of the optimum amount of water.
