Proteins play an indispensable role in all the biological processes of the body and amino acids are the building blocks of it. Amino acids are used to make protein to help the body carry out many important body functions. It helps the body grow and repair worn-out tissues. They also play an important role in the transport and storage of nutrients. They influence the functioning of glands and organs. They have a key role in removing wastes from the body. Deficiency of proteins (amino acids) can cause metabolic disorders and risk of debilities which can have serious health consequences.

Amino acids combine with DNA and perform many functions. They bind with each other forming a chain system. The chemical structure of each amino acids controls the shape of the protein chain. This shape determines the function of the protein.

Amino acids are best known for their role in building muscle and strength in athletes. Twenty different types of amino acids are known to form human peptides and proteins. There are nine essential amino acids which come from the diet. Soya beans and animal products contain a specific amount of all the nine amino acids and are called complete proteins. Human body produces 11 amino acids it needs on its own. They are called non-essential amino acids. The recommended dietary protein allowance is 46 grams for women and 56 grams for men.

Sufficient intake of amino acids is crucial. It regulates appetite, digestion, metabolic rate, and burning of fats. It provides the ability to cope with stress and boost the immune system. Some amino acids help in the production of hormones. Other amino acids produce nitric oxide which helps lower blood pressure by relaxing muscles in the blood vessels. It regulates contraction of the heart. Some amino acids are metabolized for energy.
